The casino in the spa town

Why do some spa towns have a casino, and what does that mean for your visit? The essentials at a glance.

What is a Spielbank?

A Spielbank is a state-licensed house. The federal states set the framework: Hesse through its Glücksspielstaatsvertrag, Baden-Württemberg through its state gambling act, Bavaria through its own Spielbankordnung. These rules cover, for example, possible opening hours and the right to refuse entry.

How Bavaria regulates it

  • Houses may open daily at 12:00 at the earliest and must close by 4:00 at the latest.
  • Opening hours and closing days are posted at the entrances.
  • The house may refuse entry without giving a reason.
  • It keeps a visitor list and may adopt bans issued by other houses.

Our three houses are in Hesse and Baden-Württemberg; the Bavarian rules show the framework.

Why in a spa town?

The Kurhaus was the centre of the spa town, and in Baden-Baden, Wiesbaden and Bad Homburg it was also where the casino found its place. The Baden-Baden house speaks of almost 200 years in the neoclassical Kurhaus. In Wiesbaden it has been in the Kurhaus's former Weinsaal since 1985.

In Bad Homburg it was even a condition: the concession of 1840 obliged the Blanc brothers to build a Kurhaus and an English park.

Three German towns have been part of UNESCO's “Great Spa Towns of Europe” since 2021: Baden-Baden, Bad Ems and Bad Kissingen.

Two rooms: classic and slot hall

Classic room

The room with the tables. It opens in the afternoon or early evening (Baden-Baden 3 pm roulette, Wiesbaden 2:45 pm, Bad Homburg 2:30 pm) and has admission and clothing rules.

Slot hall

The room with the machines. It opens earlier (Baden-Baden and Wiesbaden 11 am, Bad Homburg noon) and, per the three houses, has no admission fee. Baden-Baden asks for “smart casual” clothing; for the others please check the website.

Who protects the guest: OASIS

OASIS is the nationwide self-exclusion system covering all forms of gambling. You can request a block for yourself; third parties can request one too. At the entrance of an arcade, a Spielbank or a betting shop identity is checked, and a blocked person must be refused entry.

According to RP Darmstadt (16 Mar 2026) requests can be filed entirely digitally. The legal basis is the 2021 Glücksspielstaatsvertrag.

    Play responsibly

Gambling can be addictive. Admission to a Spielbank is from 18, in Bavaria from 21; Baden-Baden also states 21. Decide on time and money beforehand and stick to it.

With OASIS you can have yourself blocked nationwide for all forms of gambling, or a third party can request a block. ID is checked at the door; blocked persons must be refused entry.
